As individuals we should understand where we are most likely to apply our energy, and our talents. This is the realm of career interests, personal values and ‘stickability’, all of which influence our success, and also our long term happiness. Indeed individual values, motivation and interests are crucial to answering the ‘why’ question: why we wish to work in a given employment sector, for an organisation with a particular set of aims and objectives, in the good and more challenging times.
Profiling for Success contains a number of tools that help to reveal the inside world of motivation. The Career Interests Inventory (CII) uses interests, skills and work styles as a starting point for career exploration and what it is in employment that can spark enthusiasm. Whereas the Resilience Scales (RI) provide a purchase on how a person is likely to cope with potentially stressful events: those everyday situations that can drain energy and motivation.
The Values-based Indicator of Motivation (VbIM) provides a comprehensive assessment of core values. It does this in a number of ways, and uniquely lets individuals contrast their ‘top’ values in both broad and detailed ways, as well as providing a comparison with other people. This gives VbIM extraordinary reach and the ability to form the basis for profound discussions about why a person does what they do – to pinpoint what really matters.
All these tools add new perspectives to an understanding of the various aspects of motivation, and find applications in career and personal development.
